Analysis

IWM .jpeg

The Imperial War Museum, designed by Daniel Libeskind, is a vivid piece of architecture, the building was made from aluminium clad, and has a grey tint the whole way around. The reason Libeskind used aluminium to construct this building was so that the light blue sky would reflect off the building almost changing its colour completely. There is an explanation to the unusual design of the IWM, the architect smashed a tea pot on the floor and picked out the three biggest pieces, these three pieces would be the initial design of the museum.

Libeskind and his team had an original budget of 40 million pounds, however, the final construction only costed them 28.5 million. The project took 4 years till its doors were finally opened to the public. In my opinion, the Imperial war museum is an iconic building to Manchester. The quirky architecture used gives the building its own unique personality. “Architecture is not based on concrete and steel, and the elements of the soil. Its based on wonder.”
